Gooch joins England set up full time

Graham Gooch has quit his role as batting coach at Essex in order to take on a full-time coaching role with England.

The 58-year-old was appointed as a batting coach in the national set up for the 2009-10 tour of South Africa, but his duties with the side now mean he has had to choose between the two.

Gooch said: “I’m sad that I am unable to continue my Essex coaching duties.

“I never wanted to relinquish this role at the club but as my England commitments have grown it is impossible to do justice to both roles.”

England’s leading all-time Test run scorer has not completely severed his ties with Essex and will remain a club ambassador. However, the fact he has been asked to take the England job full-time shows the impact he has had and anyone placing a cricket bet will know this.

Alistair Cook, who had struggled with the bat at time, scored 766 runs in England’s Ashes win last winter and also clocked up 294 against India this summer.

Essex head coach Paul Grayson was obviously less than pleased to lose such an outstanding coach, but added that he understood why he had taken the decision.

Following the departure of Gooch, Essex have appointed Matt Walker to a coaching role, although he will also continue to play for the club.

Grayson added that he was excited to be working alongside Walker as he started the “next chapter of his career”.

Essex start their division two campaign against Gloucestershire on April 5th 2012.
