Strauss shines as guest star

England captain Andrew Strauss took full advantage of his two innings against India in his guest spot playing for Somerset at the weekend. The opening batsman hit a second innings unbeaten century to add to his impressive 78 from the first innings as the tourists were frustrated on the final day of the match. After being set an impossible 462 to win from the final session, India had to settle for a draw, finishing on 69-0.

Strauss had agreed the one-match move to Somerset in a bid to find some form against the Indian bowlers ahead of the upcoming Test series. The batsman struggled in the recent series against Sri Lanka, scoring just 24 runs in four innings against Sri Lanka, with particular problems against the left-arm seamer Chanaka Welegedara. Anyone looking at the England cricket odds will have been worrying about the problem.

That issue wasn’t evident here though, as Strauss looked steady and assured against whatever India threw at him. Zaheer Khan’s ineffective spell will be causing the Indian management some concern after the left-armer was handled easily by Strauss.

His aggressive second innings score of 109 not out will give the skipper plenty of confidence heading into the opening Test at Lords. The innings contained 18 fours and a six and certainly quietened critics who have described him as ‘defensive’. The onus will now be on England’s skipper to carry the momentum from this match into the upcoming series against the world’s best Test playing side.
