Ireland win fair and square in their greatest achievement of their history

Reflecting on one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history, Ireland will be feeling on top of the world after shocking England to win the game by 3 wickets on Tuesday.

Although many upsets are usually down to poor performances from the opposition or dodgy wickets etc. England can have no excuses in their defeat. The game wasn’t gifted to Ireland; they simply won fair and square, as they produced sublime performances and worked hard for the victory.

It was a great day for Irish cricket which will be remembered for many years to come. Before the game however, nobody gave a second though for Ireland to beat England’s impressive score of 327. But Kevin O’Brian stepped up to produce an unbelievable innings and a record rate of 100 runs from just 50 balls to win the game with his total of 113 runs, stunning the cricketing world with one of the most impressive latest cricket scores in some time.

O’Brian was very impressive with his consistent clean hitting as he produced his excellent performance. This was no fluke of a lucky run of slogs where every ball had to go –O’Brian adapted his game to produce the clean shots which fell within his area, while reining himself in when Ireland got ahead of the rate.

The fact that the game at one stage was looking like it was over, would have actually been an important factor in Ireland’s mentality on their way to victory.

At 111-5 Ireland had little to lose and in those situations where it’s hard to believe you can actually win the game, the pressure comes off and it becomes a laugh. Anyone following the live match score would have been stunned by what came next.

But when the last 10 overs quickly became in sight with the possibility of a win, the pressure would have been like nothing the Irish players would have ever experienced. And to their credit they dealt with the pressure superbly.

They showed the mental toughness required to produce victories at elite levels of sport and in particular World Cups, as O’Brien remained to look cool and composed at the crease in the closing stages.
A great performance, O’Brien and Ireland can be extremely proud of their victory.
