Time for Pietersen to step up his game

Kevin Pietersen is an extraordinary cricketer. He is one of the most talented players to have worn England colours and he represents everything that is exciting about modern day cricket. However, we haven’t seen this side of him for a little while.

Don’t get me wrong, Pietersen has still performed a valuable enough role in the team. He averaged above 50 in the West Indies for example. However, in the One Day Internationals in the winter he was way below par.

Then, in the two test matches against the West Indies at the beginning of the current English summer, he only managed an average of 24.50. Overall, he hasn’t been making the type of impact that we expect of him.

Remember when he burst onto the scene in the ODI games in South Africa back in 2004? He was unorthodox, destructive, intimidating and extremely confident. This is the Pietersen I want to see returning for the rest of the summer.

In the last few months, I have been nervous watching KP bat because he has looked scratchy and nervous at times. This isn’t the way it should be. It is time to do away with this please Mr Pietersen. You are England’s best batsman and it is about time you reminded us as to why.

The Hampshire man has been speaking ahead of the World Twenty20 tournament and he admitted that he is looking for improvement in this form of the game. He says he needs to play ‘more Twenty20 cricket’ in order for this to happen.

As for England’s chances in the competition, Pietersen says that they will need to be ‘on the ball’ because they are behind teams like India and South Africa in terms of Twenty20 experience. He revealed that England are taking everything ‘very seriously’ though and are extremely determined to do well.

In order for Paul Collingwood’s men to go far in the competition, it seems fair to say that they could do with Pietersen being bang on his game. He needs to take each innings by the scruff of the neck and dominate it for his country.

Show us that you are one of the best players around KP. Show us that you are destined to have a fabulous summer for England. Show us that the Australians should be scared of the form you are in. Show us why we should back the team with regards to The Ashes betting.

I’ve probably talked him into a duck against Holland in the opening game on Friday, but I really do think that now is the time for Pietersen to step up his game. Bear all this in mind when you make your next Kevin Pietersen bet!
