Chris Gayle launches Strauss outburst

Ahead of the Second Test at the Riverside, Chris Gayle launched an attack on England Captain Andrew Strauss over comments made about Gayle’s late arrival. In an interview with the Guardian, he also said that he won’t be too sad if Test cricket died out and he is looking to step down as West Indies captain.

Chris Gayle’s decision to arrive from the IPL just two days before the first test has attracted criticism from the media and from Andrew Strauss. Earlier this week Strauss said “There’s a line there. Certainly we wouldn’t want our players to arrive two days before. The important thing is that Test cricket gets the attention it deserves. And that means that people prepare themselves properly for any Test match you play. You don’t want Test cricket to be devalued in any way, shape or form”

Gayle hit back saying Strauss should “stay out of people’s business” and claimed that Strauss is worried about the decline of Test cricket because of his inability to play the shorter format. “I wouldn’t be so sad,” said Gayle. “Some other players would be. Maybe Andrew Strauss would be sad. Maybe he will be sad if Test cricket dies and Twenty20 comes in. Because there is no way he can make the change. So tough luck. I like Twenty20 since it come about now. I like it. Who doesn’t? Maybe a couple of the Englishmen wouldn’t like to play Twenty20”.

Gayle’s outburst is likely to spice up the second test as these comments are likely to have angered the England captain. However, comments that Gayle is considering resigning as captain is likely to affect the mood within the Windies camp. It is obvious from these comments that Chris Gayle would rather be back in South Africa competing in the IPL so his commitment to the WI can be questioned.

His comments about test cricket is likely to rightly attract a lot of criticism through the course of this week. Test cricket is and always will be the pinnacle form of cricket and naturally English players have developed their game to suit this format, so criticism of Strauss is unjust. Gayle can only play one way and that way is suited to the shorter format, so his preference of twenty20 cricket is understandable. But he gave the impression that he doesn’t mind test cricket dying out because his team lose more than they win.
