sri-lanka1Five Sri Lankan cricketers were injured after their team bus was attacked by gun man in Lahore. The team were on the way to Gaddafi stadium to resume play on day 3 of the test match. Two players, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana, were sent to hospital, while 4 others, including assistant coach Paul Farbrace received minor wounds. The authorities confirmed that all players are now okay. The players have been evacuated from the stadium by helicopter.None of the players are said to have suffered any life threatening injuries but five Pakistani policemen were killed, after the gun man opened fire on the team bus on the way to the stadium. The test match has subsequently been called off, with the remaining test and ODI matches in series doubt. The Pakistani authorities say that the attacks have the hallmarks of the Mumbai terror attacks.

This is another blow to Pakistani cricket, with thechance of international cricket being suspended in Pakistan for the next couple of years. The Sri Lankans toured Pakistan in place of India, who withdrew after the attacks in India. This tour was seen by the PCB as a way of showing that it is safe to play cricket in Pakistan. The ICC have now taken the decision to look at the hosting of the 2011 world cup, with Pakistan no longer looking like a safe venue for any form of international cricket.

The Sri Lankan cricketers are set to return home after being evacuated by helicopter, and it is likely that the day two’s play on Monday is the last form of international cricket to be held in Pakistan for the next two or three years. Further details will be released later, but at the moment the thoughts are with the Sri Lankan cricket team and the police man killed in these horrific attacks.
