Mushtaq to land England spin bowling role

Mushtaq Ahmed is close to signing a contract to be England’s spin bowling coach. The position has been vacant for a long time and now looks likely to be filled by the Pakistani leg spinner. He formed a good partnership with Peter Moores at Sussex and is looking to join fast bowling coach Ottis Gibson as an England bowling coach.

“Peter Moores asked me if I can spare some time during the summer (in 2009) or winter to work with the young England spinners and also the main spinners,” he said. “My agent is doing the deal with the (ECB), so until anything is officially agreed I don’t know when I will be starting or what I will be doing. But Peter suggested there might be an opportunity for me to work with their academy players in India after I complete my ICL commitments in November. I would be happy to work with players across the board, from the senior England team to youth sides or county second teams.”

He comes with a great experience of the England game where he has enjoyed lifting the County Championship twice and took 598 wickets. He also has enjoyed excellent Test series for Pakistan in England, Australia and the sub continent. This makes him the ideal man to educate England spinners on how to bowl in English conditions and in the international game. In the 5 or 6 years he spent in the County game at Sussex he has developed an insight into upcoming England spinners.

“I believe there are more opportunities for spin-bowling talent in England than in Asia, which may surprise people, but it is then a matter of how you nurture and develop that talent. I saw a very good prospect at Hampshire (Liam Dawson), there is Adil Rashid at Yorkshire. Of course there’s Monty, and I know there are plenty of other spinners out there in county second teams.”

What will be exciting for England fans will be the link up between Mushtaq and Rashid. Mushtaq can help Rashid to become one of the worlds best leg spinners by passing on what he has learnt in his successful career. Also, Mushtaq could be the person to teach Monty some variation and make him develop more wicket taking deliveries. Mushtaq’s appointment can only be good for the English game and in 3 or 4 years time, we could have some talented spinners battling for Monty’s position.
