England to name squad for stanford super series

England are to hold a press conference at 1400BST to announce their 13 man squad for the 2020 clashes agianst the stanford super stars, trinidad and Middlesex.

The team is expected to feature those 11 players who completed a comprehensive thrashing of south africa in the recent ODI series. Those on the fringes include Ravi Bopara, Greame Swann, Alistair cook and Ryan sidebottom who are vying for the remaining 2 spots in the team.

The inclusion of steve harmison means that either sidebottom or anderson will miss out on a spot in the final XI. While Swann battles with Patel for the spin position.

The final 11 is likely to include those who thriumped against South Africa. Which means that talented allrounder Ravi Bopara is likley to miss out despite averaging, 71.28 in the friends provident, 56 in pro 40 and 34.5 in 20twenty this year. Sidebottom could miss out in the squad altogether as the team contains already 4 quick bowlers and cover is only required for the batters and the spinner.

If this team succeds here it could be the same 11 going out in the Twenty20 world cup. This team has proved to be a strong side but question marks remain about Patel being Englands spinner. He doesn’t posses the variation of swann and could be looked upon in England’s bowling attack as the weak link to target. Patel’s inclusion pushes down Wright to no.8, and broad to no.9. With two good batsmen beneath him it begs the question of whether England actually need him in the side when the team if full of allrounders and anyone would agree that Swann is the better bowler and also a handy batsmen too.

Also today the central contracts and ODI squad to tour India is announced. With Vaughan and Hoggard likely to miss out on central contracts and the same ODI team, bar maybe Denly or Key touring India for the ODI series.

Stanford super series squad (probable): Pietersen(capt), Bell, Prior(wkt), Shah, Flintoff, Collingwood, Patel, Wright, Broad, Harmison, Anderson, Bopara, Swann.

Central contracts (probable): Pietersen, Cook, Strauss, Bell, Collingwood, Flintoff, Broad, Sidebottom, Anderson, Harmison, Panesar

India ODI tour (probable): Pietersen, Prior, Bell, Cook, Shah, Flintoff, Collingwood, Bopara, Patel, Swann, Wright, Broad, Anderson, Harmison, Sidebottom.
