Is Anderson right for one day cricket?

Jimmy Anderson has pledged to battle for his one-day place after a miserable World Cup – but is he really suited to the short from of the game?

A combination of the unhelpful sub-continent pitches and fatigue probably played a part in Anderson’s poor World Cup.

The Burnley express relies heavily on swing and although his electric displays down under showed he isn’t just a player for home matches, the hard, dry pitches of India and Sri Lanka were not his friend and those following the sports betting will have realised this.

Nor perhaps was the punishing schedule which saw him fly out to Australia at the end of October and not return any significant amount of time until March – not to mention a dash home to see the birth of his daughter. With a new born he had hardly spent time with back home you could understand if Anderson’s mind wandered slightly.

But that still shouldn’t disguise the fact he may not be well suited for a return to the side. He turns 29 this summer and with the cricket calendar as packed as it is, would now be a good time to pack the one-day in order to concentrate on test cricket and turn out for his county Lancashire once in a while?

Not everyone agrees with the ‘specialising’ of cricketers but if the ICC insist on filling the year with more and more tournaments then that is the way things will go. Anyone looking at the in play odds will know the fresher teams tend to do better when it comes to the crunch.

Anderson’s batting is also a concern, a dogged night-watchmen he isn’t one you would rely on to hit the winning runs on a regular basis.

There is no doubting Anderson’s qualities as a test bowler and one that needs to be fit, firing and in the team for many years to come, but to do that concessions need to be made and his weaknesses as a one-day bowler means he should retire from ODI’s and concentrate on test matches.
